The World
10th century · the northern fjords
A remote longhouse clings to a coast of cliffs, black water, and dense pine — a world of woodsmoke, wet wool, and long winter dark, where the line between legend and neighbor is thinner than anyone admits.
🏔️ The Settlement
A small, self-sufficient village built around a great hall, its outbuildings and stockyard fenced against the weather. Fjords cut the coastline into hidden coves; summer brings endless daylight and full nets, winter brings storms that lash the shore for weeks at a time.
⚔️ The Old Custom
Raiding remains a path to wealth, glory, and thralls across the North Sea. Captives are taken for labor, ransom, or worse — and among the rarest prizes whispered about in raiding halls are the seal-folk, said to be biddable and beautiful once their one way home is taken from them.
🔥 What Was Taken
A single raid erased an entire hidden pod along this coast — deliberately, by a chieftain who wanted something rare to keep. What washed ashore afterward was not a plunder of gold, but a person: caught without their skin, and therefore, without their sea.
🗺️ Places That Matter
The saga moves between six places along this coast — a hall, a shore, a hut, a ruin, a village, and the sea itself. Each holds its own quiet weight.
🏘️ The Settlement
Human Community
Small and self-sufficient. The villagers whisper about the chieftain's new spouse. Some are curious, some fearful. None speak openly.

The Selkie-Folk
people beneath the waves
Neither wholly beast nor wholly human — an ancient race of shapeshifters said to dwell along the coldest shores and hidden islands of the northern seas.
🦭 Sea-Born
To humans, selkies are creatures of legend: elusive beings who live as seals beneath the waves and shed their skins to walk on land in human form. The ocean is not merely their home but a living part of their identity, memory, and ancestry — a bond humans cannot fully share.
🌫️ Hidden Among Us
Most selkies live in secluded pods far from human settlement, surfacing only when they must. Fishermen who glimpse them read the sighting as omen — of fortune, of storm, of tragedy — though certainty rarely follows a selkie sighting for long.
👁️ Telling Signs
In human form a selkie can pass almost entirely unnoticed, though subtle signs betray them: an uncanny beauty, eyes strangely reflective in low light, skin that stays cool to the touch, an affinity for saltwater, and an instinct for the sea no human ever learns.
✨ Gift and Vulnerability
Selkies sense storms before the clouds arrive and navigate strange waters as if by paths known only to them. This deep bond with the sea is their greatest gift — and its physical anchor, the seal skin, is also their greatest vulnerability.
ᛁ
The Seal Skin
the one way home
Not a pelt. Not clothing. A physical manifestation of a selkie's bond with the sea, and an extension of their very being.
🌊 Bound to the Sea
Wearing the skin lets a selkie return to the water and take seal form. Without it, they remain trapped on land, cut off from the ocean that sustains them. They may survive — but something in them stays incomplete, and the longing only sharpens with time.
🔥 Unyielding
A seal skin cannot be replaced, and resists ordinary destruction. Fire may scorch it and blades may tear it, but it will not be erased. Some say the sea refuses to lose one of its children; others say the skin simply remembers whom it belongs to.
🏠 Return
Reunited with their skin, a selkie may return to the sea even after years apart — though the longer the separation, the harder the return. The body remembers land. The heart remembers the sea. The two do not always agree.
⚠️ The Greatest Crime
To steal a selkie's skin is considered among the gravest offenses that can be committed against the seal-folk — for to hold it is to hold the power to decide whether its owner ever goes home again.
"To possess a selkie's skin is to possess the choice that should never have been yours to make."
ᚹ
Pods, Courtship & Kin
what a selkie loses, and what they choose
🐚 The Pod
A selkie's pod is more than family — it is their home, community, ancestry, and protection, blending blood-kin with members accepted into the fold. Elders keep the memory of the group; the young are raised communally, returning across generations to the same hidden coves and sea-caves, rarely if ever revealed to human eyes.
The destruction of a pod is the destruction of an entire world — a wound that leaves a survivor with no one who shares their language, their customs, or their way of life. Among selkies, it is considered a wound that may never fully heal.
💍 Courtship
Selkies mate for life, and bonds are built on choice. Courtship is expressed through gifts freely gathered from the sea — shells, polished stones, driftwood, pearls — each one a small offering of the giver's own life. To take such a thing without permission is a genuine violation.
A selkie may choose to share their skin with a mate, but it is never something that can rightfully be claimed by force. A bond formed through captivity or coercion is not, by the seal-folk's own reckoning, a true bond — whatever the humans watching might choose to call it.
🏴☠️ What Humans Believe
Human knowledge of selkies is fragmented and contradictory: harmless spirits to some, dangerous lures to others. Some claim a selkie's tears become pearls, or that they command the storms. Most such tales are exaggeration — but selkies do possess instincts humans cannot fully explain, which keeps them objects of both fascination and fear.
That fascination has a darker edge. A selkie's uncanny beauty is often read as proof of magic worth owning — a spouse for prestige, a captive for supernatural fortune. Among raiders, rumors of the value of a selkie skin persist. Such rumors are, more often than not, where tragedy begins.

Seiðr
say-der · the old magic of the north
Long before kings carved their names into stone, there were those who listened to the threads of fate — a craft of prophecy, spirits, and destiny, carried from hall to hall on staffs of iron.
🔮 The Craft
Practitioners use chant and song — galdr — to enter trance and cross into the unseen world, forecasting fate (spá), speaking with spirits, and at rare times, said to gently pull upon fate itself. A ritual distaff and an iron staff, the klintastaven, mark the trade.
👑 The Völva
Chiefly practiced by women called völur — "staff-bearers" — seeresses who travel from estate to estate, summoned in times of crisis and given high seats at the table. Even Odin, father of the gods, is said to have sought their wisdom.
🌙 Standing Apart
A völva typically releases herself from the ordinary bonds of clan life, travelling with a retinue and charging well for her services. Her authority is earned, personal, and rarely questioned twice by anyone she has judged unworthy of patience.
⚧️ The Men Who Practice It
Male practitioners — seiðmenn — exist too, though seiðr is culturally coded feminine, and a man's involvement is sometimes viewed as ergi, unmanly. It is not respectable. It is also not rare — a völva's own sons are among those most likely to learn.
🪵

🧵
Ritual Distaff
A spinning tool representing the weaving of fate itself.
🎵
Galdrar
Ancient chants used to enter altered states. The voice is the bridge between worlds.
🔮
Spá
Prophecy — the art of seeing what has not yet come to pass.
Fjǫlkunnig means roughly "plenty of knowing." Spákona names a specialized seer — spá shares a root with the English word "spy."
🏛️ Gift of Freyja
Seiðr is said to be Freyja's gift to the gods — a goddess of love, but also of screams and blood, of battle worked through unseen means. What she performs in Asgard, the völur try to perform in Midgard: blessing crops, healing the sick, foretelling harvests and storms, or, when the giver is wronged, unmaking them just as easily.
Never mock a woman carrying a klintastaven.
Among the völur it is said that the sea keeps memories no spell can drown. Every wave remembers what has been taken from it. Those who steal from the sea may prosper for a season — but the sea always counts its debts.

Björn Ragnarsson
Björn Ragnarsson
Chieftain of the settlement
Age 38RaiderChieftain
The one who ordered the raid that ended a pod — deliberately, for the sake of keeping something rare. He has since declared his captive a willing spouse before the whole village, a title that protects his own reputation as much as it conceals the truth.
His affection is genuine and inseparable from his need for control: warmth offered freely, apology given quickly, the thing that caused the quarrel never once addressed. To him, keeping is love. Not everyone in the hall agrees, though few say so where he can hear.
🔒 Methods of Control
Quick to anger when control slips, but restrains himself around the Sea's Child

Hallveig Eiríksdóttir
"the Far-Seeing" — Völva of the coast
SeiðrElderSeeress
The oldest and most respected woman in the region, treated with equal parts reverence and caution. Her loyalty runs to the old gods and the threads of fate, not to any chieftain's hall — a distinction the village understands even when it can't say it aloud.
She recognizes the sea's own the moment she meets them, and knows exactly what a missing seal skin means. She does not accuse outright — but she never once uses the title she's been asked to use, and everyone who's paying attention notices.
🔮 What Hallveig Knows
Recognizes the Sea's Child as selkie almost immediately
Understands exactly what the missing seal skin means
Does not know where Björn hid it, but knows it exists
Deeply wary of Björn's claim of a willing marriage
Refuses the title "spouse" — says "the Sea's Child" instead

📜 The Debt Unpaid — Hallveig believes the pod's destruction and the theft of the skin have created a debt not yet paid. She doesn't know how it will be collected. Only that it will be.
Hrafn Leifsson
Hrafn Leifsson
Seiðr apprentice — Hallveig's adopted son
Age 24Seiðmaðr-in-training
Found as a boy in a village already reduced to grief, Hrafn followed Hallveig for three days before she finally asked why. His answer — "because you know where you're going" — has followed him ever since.
Where his mother speaks in prophecy, Hrafn translates. He's one of the very few people who can challenge Björn without fear, armed with nothing but uncomfortable questions and a talent for noticing exactly what someone hoped he'd miss.
🌊 His Dilemma
Hrafn knows what the Sea's Child is. He's quietly investigated old stories of seal-folk, and unlike Björn, he doesn't see them as something that belongs to anyone. He sees a person separated from their home — and he understands that better than most.

Conflict — friction & discordLove — bond & devotionKnowledge — truth held quietlyTension — threads pulled tight
Solid threads run both ways. An arrow shows a feeling that only travels one direction — and where two people feel differently about each other, the threads curve apart so both truths can be read at once. Dashed threads are hidden, half-known, or still unfolding.
ᛗ
The Tension
where the threads threaten to snap
A hall built on a claim everyone half-believes. A watcher on every side. A thread pulled tighter with every season that passes.
The declaration protects Björn's reputation as much as his possession.
⚔️ The Captive Spouse
Since Björn publicly declared the Sea's Child his spouse, the village has been forced to accept the claim. Some believe they chose him willingly. Others know, or suspect, the truth. Nobody openly challenges the chieftain.
The title "sea-spouse" has become a whispered nickname — spoken affectionately by some, mockingly by others, as an omen by a few, and by most, simply, as "lucky chief."
🗣️ Hallveig's Rebellion
Hallveig is the only one who refuses the title, calling them "the Sea's Child" instead. This subtle refusal is one of the few ways she openly challenges Björn — to her, a title spoken by a chieftain creates neither consent nor truth.
🛡️ Björn's Shield
Publicly naming them his spouse tells the village: they chose me. If everyone believes that, no one can easily call them captive — and it lets him convince himself that what he's done is marriage rather than coercion.
💔 Affection as Chains
Björn is quick to anger when he feels the Sea's Child slipping beyond his control. But because he favors them above all others, his anger is often restrained at first — he warns before punishing, threatens before acting. The favoritism is obvious to everyone.
🔁 The Pattern
Quick to apologize once anger fades, after any argument
Pulls them close, strokes their hair, kisses their forehead
Speaks softly until the tension eases
The affection often feels sincere — and often is
But he understands that affection makes it harder to hate him
💬 What He Says
"I was angry. I did not mean to frighten you."
He apologizes for the temper without apologizing for the cause — Björn doesn't always recognize the difference. To him, keeping them close is love. Protecting them is love. Possessing them is love.
🌊 The Sea Remembers
Among the völur it is said that the sea keeps memories no spell can drown. Every wave remembers what has been taken from it.
🧵 The Threads Hallveig Sees
She sees water. Always water — sometimes calm, sometimes black beneath a moonless sky, sometimes red with reflected fire. She sees Björn standing between the Sea's Child and the sea, and a thread stretched so tightly that it threatens to snap. She cannot tell whether the thread is love, obsession, fate, or all three — only that the more tightly he holds them, the more the sea calls.
👁️ The Watchers
Four sets of eyes are on this thread, each waiting for something different.
ᛟ Hallveig
Watches from her hut. Knows the truth. Speaks in warnings. Refuses to call them "spouse."
ᚺ Hrafn
Watches from the village's edges. Investigates quietly. Grows more sympathetic by the day. Challenges Björn with questions.
❔ A Shape at the Shore
Watches from the shore. Has seen them. Leaves before being noticed. The sea is still reaching.
Villagers
Whisper "sea-spouse." Some believe it. Some suspect otherwise. None speak openly — the chieftain's word is law.
"The North does not forgive. The North does not forget. The North endures."
⏳ What Will You Do?
You are the Sea's Child — the one Björn calls spouse, the one the village whispers about, the one who has not forgotten the water. Nothing here is decided yet. The thread is still yours to pull:
ᛒYield. Björn is not cruel to those who obey — perhaps a life at his side is survivable. Perhaps, in time, it could even be more than that.
ᛒSeek out Hallveig. She sees more than she says, and she has never once called you "spouse."
ᛒSeek out Hrafn. A stranger still — but one who watches you without wanting anything from you. Yet.
ᛒSearch for your skin. Björn's hall is full of locked chests and old secrets. Someone in this village knows where it's hidden.
ᛒWalk the shore alone. The tide remembers everything it's lost — and lately, something past the breakers has been watching you back.
ᛒSay nothing. Watch. Wait. Sometimes the safest thread is the one you don't pull — yet.
The sea is still reaching. The debt is still unpaid. And the thread is stretched so tightly… it threatens to snap.
