....Ferruccio Martinotti
July 1984.
Still stunned after the February gig in milan, here blast the news of an early-autumn italian tour with a stop in torino. the clash in italy twice in a year : 20 years later my hands still sweating thinking of it...
September 11 1984.
gig to be held at the curva maratona (torino football team’s terrace) of stadio comunale,at that time the soccer playground of both torino’s teams : the rotten juventus and the legendary and beloved torino. just before the opening of the doors with a crowd of at least 5,000 people, a statement of local firemen dept. spread by a megaphone updates the gig to the day after because of safety reasons of the stage. the crowd moves away without any kind of tension. myself alongside 3 mates soon planning to comb the whole city looking for the band : we are 101% sure that due to gig’s adjournment the horsemen are in town.
after a couple of hours frantically spent in search of a tour bus with a uk number plate, we bump, just in front of a downtown luxury hotel called “principi di piemonte”, into a small group of guys wearing clash t-shirts. we stop the car and hear from them that the clash stay in the hotel but aren’t still back. with a lot of doubts about the reliability of the information (but without any better ideas in mind...) we decide to wait.
less than half an hour later, thanks to the holy mercy of the r’n’r gods, a grey tour bus (uk number plate...) disembarks joe vince nick pete and some crew guys.
completely out of mind we jump onto joe submerging him by hugs. he’s wearing a complete red suit, tennis shoes and is sporting a red mohawk .a short speech and joe says “i go upstairs picking up paul and i’ll be back in a while”, then disappears in the hotel.
Nobody believes it’s realistic to see him back, but we’re happy indeed, it doesn’t matter. we met him, we shook his hands and embraced him : nobody dares asking more.
But r’n’r gods are on our side tonight, it is definitely OUR night and 10 minutes later the door-man opens the hotel doors showing to a little bunch of astonished no-hope kids joe, paul, pete, vince and nick alongside ray jordan.
Joe introduces the guys : paul is wearing black leather pants with a white shirt and ray presents himself as “the guru of the band”. one of us asks joe to pick a guitar and he answers “look, what’s the matter? i don’t need a guitar...” and starts beating with his hands on a car’s hood singing something that sounds like an old standard. Can you figure out? AMAZING,UNBELIEVABLE.
We move to a sort of club a couple of blocks far from the hotel, called “centralino”: it’s like floating in the air, i don’t feel the feet touching the sidewalk, i’m a human overcraft with the heart blasting in the chest and the pupils dilated by demented, unbearable excitement.
Along the road i’m chatting with paul and vince. i tell them i need a new record like my lugs need oxygen and i’m dreaming of a record as honest and true as the first eponymous.
Vince answers they’re actually working on a new album and, no doubts about, the purpouse is to issue a “punk record”. (well, i don’t pretend to add something useful in order to clarify the fogs that still today covering the genesis of cut the crap, and honestly speaking i don’t give a flying fuck..., but that is what it has been pointed out about.).
At the centralino.
Paul, nick and pete sitting very quitely watching music videos, vince soon disappears with a blonde girl, ray manages the treasury for the booze (he has in his pocket an xl roll of lira...) and joe...well, joe is the epitome of joe strummer : a nuclear volcano, a genuine, generous mate, willing to answer to every silly question or “original” statement (i mean each one of us told him at least 25 times “you changed my life”...), offering drinks and asking about italy and life in torino.
(in the common opinion he was supposed to be in that period confused and depressed because of artistic and personal reasons. i don’t know what happened elsewhere, but during that night i saw joe happy, funny, smart, turbo-charged : i could haven’t imagined a man and a musician happier and more committed).
We chat and drink till morning comes : anectodes from the glory days (“siouxsie was going to mess around with me one night in amsterdam”); jones (“if he enter the room now, i punch him in the face!”); music (he’s into waits’ swordfishtrombones; he’ll love for the life 1st ramones record and he hates police’s fake white reggae); clash ( side 1 of the eponymous is his favourite and white man the finest hour); beat poets (and the importance of benzedrine...); england under mrs. thatcher; bruce lee; ying and yang; bologna’s gig in 1980 (one of his most lovely remembered) and more more and more.
At 5 o’clock the owner literally kick us out of the club and, with the pain in our souls, we realise we do have to walk back to the hotel.
Time to say goodbye, it’s around 6. someone asking the guys autographs and joe, unlike paul pete and nick, denies, considering it a useless, superstar dumb gesture.
But as the ultimate gift of this unreal night he asks the italian translation and then writes on a sheet of paper : WE WANNA LIVE TONIGHT.
(the gig didn’t take place anymore).

Their music is energetic and primitive, with strong reggae veins, and their popularity, despite the long record silence (the last LP, .Combat rock », belongs to the 82) does not seem to have diminished since the success of "Giue 'etti enough rape" and the double. Clash concerts canceled
La Stampa - 12 September 1984
Clash's long-awaited concert canceled The expected "Clash concerts canceled The expected" Clash concerts canceled Reason: the stage of the municipal stadium was not safe -
Bitter disappointment for six-seven thousand people A few moments of tension, but there were no riots - Tickets will be refunded today
Unpleasant surprise, last night, for the 6-7 thousand young people who came to the municipal stadium to attend the concert of the English complex "The Clash". ' The expected performance of the five rock singers was suspended for safety reasons: the stage on the stadium track had not been set up in accordance with the law.
So, after an inspection, the provincial supervisory commission decided not to give a favorable opinion for the performance of the show. L' irregularities found by the technicians referred to the metal supports that support the coverage of the stage.
According to the commission, these supports had been "raised" obliquely and could compromise the stability of the entire implant. • We agree with the safety technicians - said Luciano Casadei, on behalf of Arci, one of the associations promoting the concert - and we respect their decision. I
t should be clarified that the cólpa is not ours, but of the private company that mounted the system not in compliance with the standards ». Already an hour before the start of the show, in front of the stadium there were a few thousand young people who also came from outside Piedmont.
Three thousand had already purchased 1 ticket (14 thousand lire each) in pre-sale, others in the stadium ticket office. As soon as it is the rumor has spread that the concert was skipping, there were moments of tension, above all because of some agitated. The massive presence of police, carabinieri and urban police made the few troublemakers give up while the majority of young people began to move away between disappointment and bitterness.
The organizers hoped until the last moment to postpone the concert until today, but this was not possible due to previous commitments of the complex. All 1 ticket holders will be able to obtain a refund by going to the same sales points where 11 have bought.
Those who purchased the coupon at the stadium ticket office can be reimbursed by appearing today, starting at 18, in the same ticket office. Yesterday deed no stage punk concert
La Stampa - 12 September 1984
Yesterday stage act no punk concert Yesterday deed no stage punk concert Yesterday deed no stage punk concert HAVE MADE «CLASH» THE «SUBVERSIVES» WITHOUT PERMIT OF FITNESS Codex at the ticket office.
Franco Manone, the Impresario, is philosophical: ^ This is a job like any other - he says - the unexpected is always there '. This time it is the scaffolding: two of the four metal towers that support the 11 tarpaulin placed above the stage and that "must also support the weight of the steel beams of the lighting are obviously inclined and could not stand up to the performance of the London quartet . "If the communication had arrived this morning - someone comments - he would have had time to repair the inconvenience".
So an antl-Clash conspiracy? They have no doubts.
Everything comes to the stadium, sema sex we are nothing. Style is support for sex and subversion is the meaning of life ". Then she steps off the stage, signs autographs, kisses the lens of a young photographer and while doing all this she also manages to answer some questions. What spring drives you to spread libertarian and subversive ideas through your music, love or despair? 'No, don't despair, I have to do it, I feel I have to do it ».
About the punk movement: the authorities said tonight that punk is not dead, because they evidently consider it dangerous. " Then there will be no concert even tomorrow night, not even if the stage is set up .... •
Of course, no. They would say that it rains blood, that the sky is turned upside down, they would find an excuse for you ... We would have played in any condition, even on the ground, but they said no. " So, for an incredible easiness (but 11 Mr. Togni in charge of setting up the stage, could not see that the structures were crooked and did not know that in Turin on safety is not transected?)
The legend of the subversive band is confirmed, rejected in America (fm so bored utith Usa, says one of their indicted pieces) censored in England (Bankrobber) very unpleasant to the police (Complete control and Police and Thieves, their other songs), which from White Hot to London's burning, through London CalUng and Sandinista \ they have been carrying out their tough Combat Rock for eight years.
In Turin, was Radio Clash gagged? Another tile is added to the mosaic of the punk myth. He waited last night in front of the stadium, but everything was useless, supplied with beers and bottles of vodka which they distribute to the few present: • Let's sing and dance together, have fun ». But nobody wants to, we prefer to listen to the angry speech of the leader of the historical group of the punk movement, the hard and politicized wing of international rock. •
In these days in Italy I really enjoyed it - declares Strummer - and yesterday in Genoa, on stage, I really enjoyed it. Only in Turin they don't want us. Platini is welcome in this stadium, but not the Clash ». He explains the meaning of the motto Sex Style Subversion proclaimed by a red banner on the stage: «Sex is pLaura Schrader golarl with II Maestro Penti Vlrtanen, Fernando La Pietra and Batti Chiapperò.

Concert cancellled because Turin tax too much? Six thousand waited in vain
La Stampa - 5 September 1984
The concert canceled Turin too tax? II € on € erlo cancel Turin too tax?
Six thousand waited in vain in front of the City Hall II € on € er it canceled Turin too tax?
Protest of the rock group: «They didn't want us to sing» - The organizer: << The decision is right, the stage is not safe ». .
The dripping of demonstrations that abort continues because the organizers do not respect the safety rules.
On Tuesday evening the concert of "Clash" jumped to the stadium, the English rock complex that had attracted six to seven young people to our city, some of whom came from outside Piedmont. "A conspiracy - thundered 11 leaders of the" subversives "Joe Strummer - the Turin authorities do not want to let us play."
The free is «Angry Strummer to believe that a plot has been hatched to prevent him and his other companions from performing in front of the Turinese. The reality is another and well known to the organizers of "salons", exhibitions, festivals and shows, managers of cinemas, theaters and public places.
"The Statute effect" in our city did not last for a day, a week or a month. For once, a tragedy has served, albeit at a high price (how to forget the 64 victims?), To become aware of a serious problem. In reality, the Turin authorities in charge of safeguarding public safety are severely applying the relevant regulations.
Many are wondering: the same rules are enforced with equal care in other Italian cities and regions? Would the various provincial commissions block a concert in a stadium because the stage had been set up at the bcll'e better?
In Turin it happened and the organizers of the show themselves, hearing the news of the cancellation, did not take much of it. -The commission acted correctly - commented Luciano Casadei, one of the promoters of the aborted rock event - the stage was not safe ». GJP one of the promoters of the aborted rock event - the stage was not safe ». GJP one of the promoters of the aborted rock event - the stage was not safe ». GJP

The Clash - Toronto Bus Interview April 1984
Joe Strummer interviewed by Lisa Robinson for WNYC?
This 2-part interview presents polar extremes of Joe Strummer. The first part most likely takes place in late 1983, after Mick Jones left the band but before the new Clash line-up started touring together. The majority of this segment involves Strummer heatedly discussing all the reasons Jones was fired. He then goes on to talk animatedly about the new incarnation of the band and how everyone in America is on drugs.
In the second part of the interview, recorded in the beginning of 1984, Strummer sounds melancholy and exhausted. However, with the departure of Mick Jones from The Clash being old news by this point, Lisa Robinson is able to steer the questioning towards what Strummer makes of performing, success, and his music.
