Cut The Crap Tour @ Rutgers University 4/16/84

I saw this show at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ in April, 1984. It was the only time I was able to see the band and unfortunately it was The Clash Mk2 without Mick. Was anyone else at this show? It was a memorable gig for me as a 19 year old music fanatic. I vividly remember the thrill of seeing Joe Strummer up close but also remember he seemed very out of it. He insulted the audience for most of the show. I was also mesmerized by the the ring of video screens behind the stage showing quick cut images from old movies spliced in with footage of the riots in the UK. Was anyone else there? Any have the set list or a recording? Many thanks.

"I remember seeing the Clash II at Rutgers Univeristy in New Brunswick New Jersey in the spring of 1984. Two friends were with me and both remember the show as well. I cannot find a setlist anyplace. In fact, I cannot find any evidence that the show took place.

Did we hallucinate the entire concert? Was anybody else there?"

The concert is perhaps the most transparent communication between the Clash and their audience, and it is in the context ofsuch a nonmediated communication that the Clash's political efforts are most clearly seen. In the Spring of 1984, I attended a Clash concert at Rutgers University. The actions of the Clash at this concert might have appeared to an uninformed observer to be quite unintelligible, but in terms of the above discussion of the group's intention, its praxis made complete sense.

I will describe here only its use of video images. A series of large televisions were placed around the stage and played videotapes throughout the show. These videos, in classic detournement fashion, continually juxtaposed two kinds of images against one another. First, for example, Clint Eastwood would appear on the screen and then footage of the youth riots in Great Britain would appear. Back and forth from the image of the outsider to the image of the revolutionary, the video moved.

One concert reviewer was upset that Strummer, in concert, quite selfconsciously affected the character of a tough Marlon Brando on stage, but on the basis of the above understanding of the group's intention, this made sense: Marlon Brando was singing about social injustice. The Clash, dressed like hoodlums, were decrying the lack ofjustice in the world, U.S. and Soviet imperialism, and police brutality.

The Clash - Toronto Bus Interview April 1984

Joe Strummer interviewed by Lisa Robinson for WNYC?

This 2-part interview presents polar extremes of Joe Strummer. The first part most likely takes place in late 1983, after Mick Jones left the band but before the new Clash line-up started touring together. The majority of this segment involves Strummer heatedly discussing all the reasons Jones was fired. He then goes on to talk animatedly about the new incarnation of the band and how everyone in America is on drugs.

In the second part of the interview, recorded in the beginning of 1984, Strummer sounds melancholy and exhausted. However, with the departure of Mick Jones from The Clash being old news by this point, Lisa Robinson is able to steer the questioning towards what Strummer makes of performing, success, and his music.

I saw The Clash at Bonds - excellent
