The day after the memorable Brixton gig The Clash and this writer travelled down to the seafront at Brighton for a gig at the cavernous Brighton Centre. The 4,500 capacity venue was not full with tickets available at the door. The events venue was just not suited to a rock’n’roll show and the sort of band/audience interaction The Clash thrived on but it was a good if not great show. Highlights are Jimmy Jazz and Terry’s first for 5 years, I’m So Bored With The Usa!
Unfortunately only one audience recording circulates in varying quality but the best is an analogue copy or two off the master. Can anyone provide an upgrade?

The recording begins with a few seconds of the intro music and then the band launch into London Calling (no White Riot like the night before). There is a roar around the taper at the end of the song but there did not seem great atmosphere in the cavernous Brighton Centre. The performances of Clash City Rockers and White Man in Hammersmith Palais and indeed most tonight sound fine so a real shame the master tape still does not circulate. There is a long extended drum and bass ending but no Joe adlibs; possibly something happening off stage.
“This is a version of the national anthem especially commissioned by No. 10 Downing Street” is Strummer’s intro to The Leader. Joe wails “Woah woah woah” the usual cue for The Call Up but after a pause very atypically they go into Clampdown instead. Joe’s
adlib’s largely unclear. Terry gets a welcome before Guns of Brixton , Joe’s (switched to) bass lines quite clear. The band then work through Should I Stay or Should I Go, Spanish Bombs,and Wrong Em Boyo before another Joe “Woah woah woah” wail this time is The Call Up. Yet another cry from Joe and Mick belts out Police On My Back. After an edit Joe adlibs after the “guitar city “bridge on The Magnificent Seven.
The sound on the second CDR is now significantly worse through Rock The Casbah (I remember the Clash front line impressively making use of the large stage and leaping off the drum riser mid song) Brand New Cadillac, Somebody Got Murdered (and even worse sound ) on Career Opportunities.
Fortunately the sound improves on I Fought The Law and reverts back to the quality on the first CD. The first encore begins with Jimmy Jazz; a definite highlight for in particular Mick’s playing and Joes adlibs (though largely unclear). After a “Hey bass man” Paul plays a bass line walk and Joe adlibs including “go and hire a Ford Cortina put it to the floor down the motorway at 95” Not extended but very good indeed. English Civil War as the night before is also very good.
“We’d like to do an experiment here, as I was coming in this afternoon somebody asked if we could play I’m So Bored With The USA- so we’re gonna play it Terry hasn’t played this tune and I’m being serious for 5 years, so this is called the test of a memory man!” After a rather ragged start they pull it together it sounds fine and and gets a roar from the audience. The band leave the stage then after an edit return for Straight To Hell, the audience clap along to Terry’s intro that sounds on the tape like an echo chamber! The gig concluded with a charge through Janie Jones and Garageland.

The Clash had previously played the Top Rank and University but the massive 4,500 capacity Brighton Centre was chosen for the southern England venue for the 82 tour. They were unable to fill it though with plenty of spare tickets available despite the famous Clash “walk up”.
At the time of construction, The Brighton Centre was the largest purpose built conference centre in the UK, and one of the biggest indoor arenas capable of hosting major entertainment events. Opened in 1977 by gentleman Jim Callaghan it has been regularly used since for conferences by political parties as well as live music concerts and a diverse range of other events. Since 2007, it has been playing host to the Premier League Darts and Snooker.
Many varieties of the one audience recording source circulate with the sound at the bottom, the sound at the top, and various tracks missing dependent upon which copy. The best is at least one (poor) analogue copy off the master which must be a very decent master audience recording as bass is captured but ill defined, guitars up front in the mix, vocals rather distant. Its unknown generation from the master means a loss of top end crispness giving a rather muddy mid-range sound overall
The sound on the second cdr is really poor until it recovers to the level of the first CDR during I Fought The Law. There is some stereo effect if not separation of instruments.
It appears to be complete and if it is at 81 minutes it ranks as one of the shorter gigs on the tour.
