London Calling
The recording in circulation is too many generations off the master. It’s a below average sound; flat, thin and dull with plenty of distance from the stage and some slight noise. The tape runs too fast. It is not awful though with some clarity particularly on the guitars. Vocals are too poor to make out Joe’s adlibs and bass is a poorly defined heavy rumble.
The audience near the taper clap along intrusively to most songs. To conclude, the recording quality is too poor to make it an enjoyable listen.

Sweden 1984
The Swedish radio broadcast the the gig the night after Stockholm ’84 and the producers worked really hard on presenting the new tunes but started up with London Calling. Unfortunately my tape was damaged.
Stockholm 81
The ones I recorded myself when we followed them around the whole fxxxing globe I sent to my parents so they were intact. We recorded two sources.
From what I can recall the SQ was superb but when we pressed our copy of Stockholm ’81 we used my source (It was named “När Djurgår’n fick flytta ut för The Clash” b t w) and Michael, a friend and fellow punter placed his tape recorder in front of the master board.
This alternate source was later used for “Stockholm’s Burning” and it sounds a bit better but this source has this guy who’s talking all the time between the tunes. My source has the idiot who screams “White riot!” behind me when Joe talks. I like mine better but everyone else prefer Michaels…
European State Radio Stations
Greek Radio 85
The Greek state radio recorded this show. (I contacted them a long time ago) but all European state archives are closed for people outside; we can’t buy or hire.
Swedish Radio
When I asked an old Clashist friend and journalist on SR ( Swedish Radio ) what had to be done to get all those shows ( Malmö, Lund, Örebro ’77, Eriksdal ’80, Stockholm and Gothenburgh ’81 and ’84, they have them all - complete with perfect sound!)
I got the answer that if a show is asked for by more than 1000 people they’ll put it on the list for P3 Live, a live show every night at 21.00. (Have a look att www.sr.se and go to P3 Live and see the program and old shows.) Unfortunately it’s only 1 hour and therefore edited.
The 16 Tons European leg continues on from Germany to Sweden and Norway. Pennie Smith was there and photos from Norway appear in her book.
There are a number of very good recordings from this leg of the tour but this is not one of them. So although the intensity of the performance is high and the audience so enthusiastic that they play 2 encores including White Riot, the poor sound quality makes this an in-essential Clash bootleg. The next night’s recording from Gothenberg is essential
The usual tour opening three songs are switched around with Safe European Home again the set opener as in 1978. Joe says “Sorry to keep you waiting for so long” but says very little else the whole set, presumably because of the language barrier.
The performance despite the poor sound is noticeably intense, with the audience very lively. On the songs where the band stretch out and Joe improvises new lyrics, like Jimmy Jazz, Clampdown, Capital Radio, Police and Thieves etc, the sound quality is too poor to hear what Joe is saying.
The unreleased Somebody Got Murdered, is again played but Police and Thieves is played straight with no Hit The Road Jack or similar intro.
On Stay Free the sound picks up a notch but an edit loses half of the song. The recording restarts with a stage announcement in Swedish then into Clampdown with Joe again intoning the London Calling recording intro “Choppers descend etc “. Joe’s fired up particularly on Jail Guitar Doors and through to a great Complete Control.
The enthusiastic audience chant “We want Clash” and the band return for Tommy Gun. Armagideon Time has some added effects from Mick. Then it’s a charge through Janie Jones and London's Burning.
The audience are rewarded with a powerful second encore, of Capital Radio and White Riot. The latter is extended with Topper starting up an extra verse and the song ends with Mick and Joe shouting “White Riot” without music.
