Rude Boy footage
The gig, filmed partially by Mingay and Hazan for Rude Boy features the ‘The Prisoner’ which fades into White Riot, as the director wanted footage of The Prisoner to use along with footage from the Glasgow Apollo. Fans locked up at Glasgow with Joe & Paul had sung choruses of the Prisoner.
The clip from the Prisoner track which appears in the film, has Mick trying to stop fighting in the audience, which actually took place during Capital Radio and which has been cleverly edited in the directors prefered place. Capital Radio may possible exist thus?
The best recording in circulation has some clarity and range but is a raw audience tape suffering from distance and distortion. It’s on a par with the Manchester Apollo bootleg of 3 nights earlier.
Guitar comes through OK, bass is buried but there, drums and vocals distant but not bad. Joe’s rhythm guitar can just be made out.
It’s at least several generations up from the master so an upgrade may yet surface. An enjoyable listen though for the performance and the atmosphere, which is captured quite well.
Aberdeen Music Hall
A complete contrast to the previous night. In Glasgow the band were largely powerless to stop the notorious Apollo bouncers beating the shit out of their fans. Here they are playing at the extremely grand Aberdeen Music Hall. A grandueresque civic building owned by the City Council which is still in use today.
It would not have been surprising if this performance had been subdued after the events from the night before but this is another great performance.
As well as being memorable for the rarish appearance of The Prisoner [at the behest of the directors?] Joe’s intro “Some of us spent last night in jail, this a song called I don’t wanna be the prisoner”, it’s the first recording in effect of Capital Radio II as Mick adds the gentle guitar intro before blasting into the song proper.
English Civil War is a further highlight with Joe saying, “all get out your songbooks and turn to page 29!” The audience get the usual tour 3 song encore ending with the chaotic White Riot.

This week something a little bit different. A couple of previously unseen photos of two absolute punk legends: Joe Strummer of The Clash and Ari Up of The Slits sent in by Les Clark, who rather modestly claims that: ‘These are not photographs, just snapshots of time leave the photos to the professionals.’ PDF
