"The Rock Garden. I nearly turned around and cowered back to Redcar when I spotted my first glimpse of punk rockers. There was only four of them but what an impact they made on me, the two lads were festooned in safety pins and badges while they both were holding dog leads and at the other end of the leads wearing diamond studded dog collars were their girlfriends wearing short skirts and torn stockings, all of them looked pure evil but cool as well, I was gob smacked as I stood there in drainpipe jeans and leather jacket and thinking 'What the Fuck!'. A couple of pints eased my nerves"

On this day in 1977, CBS released the self- titled first album by The Clash in the UK. The album is widely celebrated as one of the greatest punk albums of all time. CBS in the US refused to release it until 1979 and Americans bought over 100,000 imported copies of the record making it one of the biggest- selling import records of all time.

Pictured here is the group performing at The Rock Garden in Middlesbrough, 19th May 1977. Photo by Teesside Archive/Mirrorpix (01399114).

Below we have an original gig poster, Garry who went to the gig thinks this poster might of been from one of the Boro record shops to promote the gig as the venue was on the outskirts of town with little passing trade.

In pictures: Legendary rockers The Clash on stage at Middlesbrough's Rock Garden

Atmospheric images show mosh pit surging round the stage at the venue which in later years became The Arena nightclub

As venues go, Middlesbrough's Rock Garden can claim its place in the punk history of Teesside.

In its 70s heyday, the Newport Road venue - which started life as The Pavilion Theatre, became Club Marimba and then much later The Arena - played host to a huge number of rockers from The Sex Pistols to The Stranglers.

In May 1977, legendary rockers The Clash took to its stage - were you there?

One of our photographers was and captured a whole series of atmospheric pictures of the band from what appears to be the mosh pit at the front of the stage.

1. A sea of long haired, denim clad and leather jacketed fans pack the audience, stretching their arms out to reach the stage as the band belt out their numbers in front of spindly microphone stands.

2. Speakers are blaring out the noise and if you zoom in, you can catch the typical punk sneer on the face of the lead singer.

3. The date was May 19, 1977. The Clash had released their debut single White Riot that March and set out on a spring tour around the United Kingdom.

4. Their line up that night was Joe Strummer (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Mick Jones (lead guitar and backing vocals), Paul Simonon (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Nicky 'Topper' Headon (drums.)

5. Fans will know the iconic hit songs that came after White Riot including London Calling, I Fought The Law and Rock The Casbah.

6. There are seven images in our photographer's collection which have been unearthed from the archives here at TeessideLive. If you were there - let us know

Middlesbrough Rock Garden 'The Clash' 19 May 1977

Punk 77 .. Mick Todd recalls
I had a look inside for the listings and to my amazement there was an article about a punk band called the Clash and they were playing at some place called The Rock Garden in Middlesbrough in a few days times. I fancied going but just to be sure I wanted to hear what they sounded like so I went to WH Smiths in Redcar and bought a copy of the Clash's first album (archived PDF)
